When heated above 170 \u00b0C, it splits into <i>metaboric acid<\/i> (HBO <sub>2<\/sub> ): <\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>H <sub>3<\/sub> BO <sub>3<\/sub> \u2192 HBO <sub>2<\/sub> + H <sub>2<\/sub> O<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p> Metaboric acid is a white, cubic crystalline solid that is only slightly soluble in water. Boric acid melts at 236 \u00b0C, and when heated above 300 \u00b0C it further dehydrates to form <i>tetraboric acid<\/i> or <i>pyroboric acid<\/i> (H <sub>2<\/sub> B <sub>4<\/sub> O <sub>7<\/sub> ): <\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>4 HBO <sub>2<\/sub> \u2192 H <sub>2<\/sub> B <sub>4<\/sub> O <sub>7<\/sub> + H <sub>2<\/sub> O<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p> The term <i>boric acid<\/i> is also sometimes used to refer to these compounds. If further dehydrated, it produces <span class=\"new\">boron trioxide<\/span> . <\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>H <sub>2<\/sub> B <sub>4<\/sub> O <sub>7<\/sub> \u2192 2 B <sub>2<\/sub> O <sub>3<\/sub> + H <sub>2<\/sub> O<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p> Boric acid does not dissociate in <span class=\"new\">aqueous solvents<\/span> like <span class=\"mw-redirect\">Br\u00f8nsted acid<\/span> , but is a <span class=\"new\">Lewis acid<\/span> that reacts with water molecules to form the <span class=\"new\">tetrahydroxyborate<\/span> ion, and is observed under <span class=\"new\">Raman spectroscopy<\/span> :<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>B(OH) <sub>3<\/sub> + H <sub>2<\/sub> O<span class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/96\/Equilibrium.svg\/15px-Equilibrium.svg.png\" alt=\"balance with\" width=\"15\" height=\"13\"><\/span> B(OH)\u22124 + H <sup>+<\/sup> ( <i>K<\/i> <sub>A<\/sub> = 5.8\u00d710 <sup>\u221210<\/sup> MOL\/L; P <i>K<\/i> <sub>A<\/sub> = 9.24)<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p> The polyborate anions produced form solutions with pH 7\u201310 if the boron concentration is greater than 0.025 mol\/L.
